All month long, we’re celebrating nonprofits around our community. We love supporting various groups around town, from donating cookies to Second Harvest Food Bank to walking together as a team at the Hospice Hope Run.
Children are our favorite visitors in the bakery, because to them, everything in our bakery is magical. Making kids happy with our baked goods, whether it’s a birthday cake or an afternoon treat, always brings us joy. Since kids are such an important part of what we do, Ronald McDonald House has always had a special place in our hearts because of the amazing things they do for families and kids.
We brought our ice cream cart to the house on shirt pick-up day and gave free ice cream and cake to volunteers and visitors!
The cake Dewey’s created for RMH’s 30th anniversary celebration.
Since the first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia in 1974, the organization has grown to over 350 Ronald McDonald Houses in 52 countries and regions. RMH of Winston-Salem was founded in 1984 to provide housing and support to families with sick children being treated at Brenner Childrens Hospital and other local medical facilities. Families are able to stay in the houses and remain very close to the hospital, enjoying the emotional comforts of home without the high cost of a hotel room. Each family is charged just $10 per night, and no family is every turned away if they’re unable to pay.
This low nightly rate is how their “Sport a Shirt, Share a Night” fundraiser began. Every year since 2006, RMH has sold t-shirts for $10 each. Purchasing a shirt is like purchasing one night for a family in need. On “Sport a Shirt Day”, everyone wears their shirts to spread awareness and show support.
The Ronald McDonald House is so much more than a place to stay. They offer families a food pantry and meals, living areas, a playground, a resource library, computer access, onsite staff 24/7, and a variety of support services. When a child is sick, these comforts allow families to focus on what’s most important.
So make a donation and sign up to volunteer! You’ll help families from Winston-Salem and other nearby cities at a time when they need it most.
